Synsepalum dulciferum - 'Miracle Berry' - Air-Layer Plant #1
An Air-Layer clone of our mature and prolifically fruiting tree! Flowering and bearing fruit already! Plants from seed take several years to begin flowering so a clone of a fruiting plant is the quickest way to get these fruits going for yourself, family and friends to share the magic of this unique fruit!
This incredible flavor-changing fruit berry (technically it is a ‘drupe’) was introduced from Africa by the great Dr. David Fairchild. A distant relative of the Mamey sapote this species is a slow-growing and highly ornamental shrub and eventually small tree which produces fruits abundantly! New growth is peachy in color and flowers are small tubular buds borne on the axillary nodes of the branches in clusters and smell quite sweet when booming en masse.
There are may benefits to the fruit themselves, as they are high in nutrients and minerals but it is the protein ‘miraculin’ which alters the flavor perception of the taste buds. The effect lasts about 1 hour but can be more intense and last longer the more berries you eat! Try with a lemon or other sour fruit to experience the effect, but the fun doesn’t stop there - the taste of any drink and/or food is effected by eating the fruit! Especially good with curry!
These small ornamental plants make a nice fruiting bonsai, a great gift and conversation piece and the fruits are also delicious in their own right!
