Pouteria gallifructa - 'Sapote de Mico' - 1 gal pot
Ultra Rare!!! This is a fuzzy alien-looking sapote fruit with the taste of caramel flan! Cold hardy to upper 20sF. Tons of potential in subtropical climates! A truly special and covetedspecies which will make a great addition to any serious fruit tree collection!
This is an extremely rare and unique relative of the famed Mamey Sapote, native From Guatemala to Colombia and Brazil. It is very closely related to ‘Abiu’ (Pouteria caimito).
This fruit is unique among Pouteria because it resembles an large golden rambutan! The entire fruit is covered with whimsical spiraling tubercles! The golden fuzzy peel gives way to a tan creamy pulp that looks like caramel, and taste like it too! By many accounts this species tastes very similar to abiu (Pouteria caimito) but sweeter.
This amazingly exotic fruit tree looks like it is a true tropical from the depths of the hot jungle but is in reality native to highland areas, and in fact frost tolerant! It is also a wonderful alternative for those who wish to grow Abiu, but are located in a more subtropical zone that still gets chilly winters.
Probably takes between 5-8 years to fruit.
