Bursera graveolens 'Palo Santo' Peruvian Blue Ecotype in 8" Artisan Clay Pot
Ultra rare genetic of a very special species in a beautiful handmade clay pot crafted by a local ceramic artist! This is the actual species that is world-famous for being the source of ‘Palo Santo’ or ‘Holy Wood’ - the aromatic incense wood which is burned for spiritual tonification and cleansing. As an incense it is revered for its cedar-vanilla-spice scent which is unmistakeable!
As a plant in the garden it is incredibly beautiful and even emits its signature scent from its leaves. One can catch it passing by the plant especially when the sun is hot on the leaves. These trees are from the Frankincense family - Burseraceae which go dormant in cooler months but awaken dramatically in May-June. During its active growth season it can grow nearly a half inch per day!!! This means a even small clone can become quite a large specimen plant in just a single growth season!
While harvesting for the wood itself is a far-off idea (quality palo Santo is naturally fallen and aged) the tree does produce ample amounts of resin which smells even more strongly! The leaves can also be used for a tea with various benefits. Palo Santo is typically valued within the context of inidgenous healing modalities for immune support and more!
We searched for 10 years for this species, and of the seeds we have managed to germinate from different batches and genetics, we only got one out of 100 seeds of this unique ecotype from Peru to sprout. This is the rarest of the rare for us here at the garden, but one which we hope to spread to loving cultivators who wish to bring this special plant into their lives.
Very easy to grow! Likes rich and well-draining organic soil and lots of water and heat. Can be kept as a specimen bonsai in small pots as well. While some who grow these are in warmer climates where they could be grounded, manywhol collect these threes are actually up North indicating their flexibility to different growing situations and container culture.
This is a vigorous clone in a 4” pot. Plant offered is in the first 5 pictures, mother tree is shown in the last photo.
